Ranked Voting

What is Ranked Voting?

Ranked Voting (sometimes known as Ranked Choice Voting or RCV) is an election method in which voters rank candidates in the order of preference, instead of selecting just one.

Ranked Voting in Larimer County

In 2022 voters in the City of Fort Collins passed a ballot measure authorizing Ranked Voting for Mayor and Councilmember races with three or more candidates.

Ranked Voting will begin in Fort Collins city elections in November of 2025.

Why Ranked Voting?

  • Empowers voters by giving them more ways in which their vote can count
  • Opens elections to a broader variety of candidates and ideas
  • Promotes majority support among winners
  • Encourages candidates to appeal to a wider range of voters
