How do we Make Democracy Work for All?

Rank Choice Voting for Colorado

How does Rank Choice Voting Work?

In Plurality voting (our current system), voters frequently choose the ‘lesser of two evils’.

In Rank Choice Voting elections:

Voters rank candidates by preference on their ballots. If a candidate wins a majority of first-preference votes, he or she is declared the winner.

If no candidate wins a majority of first-preference votes, the candidate with the fewest first-preference votes is eliminated. A new tally determines whether any candidate has won a majority of the adjusted votes.

The process is repeated until a candidate wins an outright majority.

This system is sometimes referred to as an instant runoff voting system.

Advantages:

Elected office holders will have the support of the majority.

Voters may have a greater variety of candidates without ‘wasting’ their vote.

Candidates are encouraged to run more positive, issue-based campaigns and make appeals to voters to be their second or third choice.

Turnout increases in races using RCV.

Join us as we build a coalition with Represent Ft. Collins to achieve the goal of getting RCV in place for the next Fort Collins City Council election in April of 2021.

Rank Choice Voting is an advocacy position  for the League of Women Voters of Larimer County.
