Moms Demand Action invites you to a zoom talk about mental health and gun violence

APRIL MEETING – MENTAL HEALTH + GUN VIOLENCE

Tuesday, April 22nd at 6:00 p.m.; please RSVP for Zoom link

We often hear that gun violence is attributable to “mental health” instead of guns. What is the link? The answer is complex, but one thing is clear: the role of mental health in gun violence is often overstated. Our Boulder group leader, Dr. Tina Pittman Wagers, (psychologist and CU professor), and her graduate student, Gaby Russo, have taken a deep dive into the literature on this topic and have a presentation to share with you during our April meeting over Zoom.

Here is some more information about the presentation:

A perspective we often hear In the media and in political discourse is that the epidemic of gun violence is not really about guns, but about mental health. This presentation consists of a review of scientific literature around gun violence and mental health: What is the correlation in homicides, mass shooting events and gun suicide? How does gun violence impact mental health? How does gun violence (including active shooter drills) affect children and teens, how does racial bias play a role, what role might mental health treatment play and what are ways to prevent gun violence? The answers to these questions are complex, but we hope to provide you with some data and scientifically-based answers to these questions in a presentation by Dr. Tina Pittman Wagers, clinical psychologist and CU professor, and Gaby Russo, recent CU graduate and aspiring forensic psychologist.
